On last week’s Frequent Miler on the Air, we noted that the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse is now a part of Priority Pass, but the news isn’t as good as it sounds: a visit costs 1 Priority Pass visit plus a $35 top-up fee. On the show, we lamented this change and wondered aloud how long it would be until other lounge operators began asking for top-up fees. As it turns out, our fears had already been realized: as reported by Earnitback, there is also now a top up fee at Clubrooms at London Heathrow Terminal 3.
The Priority Pass app and website notes that Clubrooms Heathrow Terminal 3 is subject to an additional fee, but noes not note what the additional fee is.
Also of note is that in the Priority Pass app, it notes that Club Aspire is currently closed and as such it recommends pre-booking space if you want to visit No1 Lounge because they anticipate increased traffic at that lounge.
As pointed out by Earnitback, the No1 Lounges website recommends booking space to be guaranteed entry at either lounge with a Priority Pass. As you can see in the screen shot above, the fee for booking the No1 Lounge is £6 and the fee for booking Clubrooms is £15. I should note that the No1 Lounges site also says this about paying for a reservation:
The reservation fee is an additional charge, which secures a place for you in the lounge. The visit itself will be processed through your lounge membership card. The card must be valid on the day of your visit and should be presented at reception on arrival. If, under the terms of your membership, you have an allowance of free visits, or your visits are paid for through your associated bank account, these will also be deducted in the normal way.
I read that to mean that the reservation fee is in addition to the cost of the visit itself. As you can see above, the reservation fee at Clubrooms is £15, which is what Earnitback reports as the additional fee. However, I’m not totally sure about that. As I read the above paragraph, I think that the £15 would be to secure a reservation, but then you’d still need to “pay” 1 Priority Pass visit plus whatever “additional fee” may be. The Priority Pass app and website say:
Access to this lounge is available to Cardholders using a standard visit allocation and an additional upgrade fee payable directly to the lounge at time of entry.
It doesn’t say on the Priority Pass site whether that additional fee is £15 or whether the £15 fee to reserve space would be in lieu of a top-up fee.
Any way you slice it, this is a worrying trend. As I said on the podcast, I can’t imagine it will be long before more lounge operators want to chare more for each visit. I’ve enjoyed Priority Pass many times abroad, but there are very few Priority Pass lounges that I would have paid to visit. A Priority Pass membership is already of questionable value to the average US-based traveler since there are relatively few participating lounges in the United States. If more and more lounges begin adopting this “resort fee” model, then Priority Pass will become nothing more than a coupon. Personally, I can’t imagine I would use that type of coupon very often and I would value it very little when evaluating a credit card that offers it if that is what it becomes.

I was checking airports I frequent. LATAM Lounge in Bogota will be removed from Priority Pass effective May 24, 2025. Such a nice lounge in comparison to El Dorado. What a shame.

*prebooking of PP lounges in the UK was basically brought in at the request of cardholders. There is a massive imbalance due to number of cardholders vs number of lounges, Experience is that people would rather pay for certainty than face, at some lounges, a 90% chance of not getting in
*Clubrooms is a premium product with table service dining. It arguably shouldn’t be in PP in the first place as it is dilutive to the atmopshere. It is seen as £15 well spent (well, really £9 as you get a reservation included)
Some No1 lounges also include fast track security in the £6 fee.
I noticed something similar at another lounge recently – “skip the line” entry buy-ups being sold to queuers. Whether it’s long lines or extra fees to get in, anything of that ilk drives down the value of Priority Pass to the credit card customer and will result in fewer signups and renewals.
I’d actually like a premium travel card without Priority Pass but with a lower annual fee. Something like the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey with an expanding stable of transfer partners.

Same. While I’ve liked the occasional lounge visit to try to save on some travel costs I also frequently find them overcrowded, food mediocre or out, closed based on time of day, etc. And that’s if an airport has a lounge you can get into and it’s in in your terminal.
I really hope when Bilt launches a premium card they don’t bother with priority pass. Do something different.

Just on the additional fee for Clubrooms – on the FAQ on No1 Lounges it says the following:

App showed fee to book, but there was no fee to enter (and no need to book, in my case at 8am on a Tuesday).
The fee for the No1 Lounge is just the normal pre-booking fee that many lounges charge if you want to reserve a spot ahead of time. There is a list of lounges that allow pre-booking for a fee on the PP website (including several The Club locations in the US).
What is being alleged here is that the Clubrooms have added an additional charge for everyone based on the second screenshot in the post that has “Additional Fee Applies” in the lounge name. (Other lounges with pre-booking fees don’t have this language listed.)
Yep – No1 has three tiers of lounge brands, Clubrooms is the highest one so they added the fee

Assuming your projections are correct, then medium term it looks like PP-dependent high AF cards like Capital One Venture X and Sapphire will go down in value, while cards with a stronger lounge network, such as Amex P, will go up in value for people that care about lounge access.
VX is almost net free, but it must improve perks to keep its share.
Depends in part where you fly. Capital One and Chase, even with the small number of lounges, work really well for me.
Sure. There is always the anecdotal exception to the norm. But usually, discussions are macro. For example, if you fly regularly with one of the capital one / chase branded lounges then, yeah, that’s where you may be getting a lot more value.
The problem is their footprint is tiny compared to what Amex has built out. That’s why PP (a lounge gap-filler) made C1 and Chase competitive macro-level.
The last paragraph of this article really sums it up. Most Priority Pass lounges are not that great to begin with. Laughable to charge a fee on top of Priority Pass membership for them. Hard pass from me.
